Position Summary

Odyssey is looking for a Respiratory Care Provider Instructor to support the 711th Human Performance Wing (711 HPW), headquartered at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio.  The 711 HPW is the first human-centric warfare wing to consolidate human performance research, education and consultation under a single organization. Established under the Air Force Research Laboratory, the 711 HPW is comprised of the Airman Systems Directorate (RH), the United States Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM) and the Human Systems Integration Directorate (HP).

Responsibilities

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Work under the supervision of the site director. Plan, develop and deliver didactic, simulation, and hands-on lesson plan curricula as required.
  • Provide high-quality academic and hands-on instruction aligned with military and civilian air transport standards, including patient stabilization, aeromedical evacuation procedures, and in-flight critical care management.
  • Be responsible for the development and delivery of respiratory therapy training, ensuring students gain competency in the following areas:
  • Aerospace Physiology & Altitude Medicine: Educate students on barometric pressure changes, hypoxia risks, gas expansion effects, and other physiological challenges in air transport medicine.
  • Emergency Airway Management & Ventilation: Train students in advanced airway techniques, ventilator management, and adapting mechanical ventilation for altitude changes.
  • Pulmonary Function Testing & Blood Gas Analysis: Teach students how to interpret arterial blood gas (ABG) results in flight conditions, adjusting oxygen therapy accordingly.
  • Aeromedical Equipment & Flight Adaptations: Demonstrate setup, calibration, and operation of critical care transport ventilators, monitors, and oxygen systems used in military and civilian transport aircraft.
  • Cardiac & Pulmonary Resuscitation in Transport: Conduct resuscitation training, including external cardiac compression and emergency intervention while transporting (or while en route).
  • Prepare students for rapid patient evacuation scenarios, including adapting care in combat zones, disaster response, or humanitarian missions.
  • Engage in peer review and professional development, participating in simulated aeromedical evacuation exercises and continuing education programs.
  • Uphold safety and compliance standards in aeromedical education, ensuring proper handling of medical equipment in flight conditions and adherence to military transport protocols.
  • Create and maintain lesson plans, educational objectives, and instructional materials in accordance with USAF CCATT guidelines.
  • Provide instruction using medical simulation equipment and high-fidelity manikins to replicate in-flight scenarios.
  • Support evaluation of student competencies via written exams, practical demonstrations, and oral evaluations.
  • Participate in curriculum review boards and incorporate current evidence-based clinical practices into training content.
  • Demonstrate best practices for respiratory monitoring, patient stabilization, and ventilator function during altitude changes and decompression.
  • Participate in after-action reviews and quality assurance initiatives post-training exercises or real-world missions.
  • Advise the program Medical Director and/or Course Director on best practices for respiratory patient packaging, oxygen utilization, and disaster medical response.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of course delivery, student attendance, grades, and performance metrics.
  • Attend regular staff, administrative, and planning meetings with the Government’s medical training staff and contribute to curriculum planning initiatives.

Qualifications

Minimum Required Qualifications:

Citizenship: Must be a US citizen

ClearanceNACI

Education:  High School Diploma

Years of Experience:  Minimum of five (5) years of clinical experience in acute care settings, with at least two (2) years in critical care.

Certifications:  Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential through the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) and hold either a Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential. (No patient care).

Possess and maintain an active, unrestricted license to practice as a Respiratory Therapist in any U.S. state or territory.    Current certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Life Support (ALS). 

Shall complete the Basic Instructors Course (BIC) within 60 days of hire, then complete 60 instructor hours to be qualified.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Years of experience:  Prior military or CCAT aeromedical evacuation experience.

Certifications:  Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).

 

Other Qualifications:

  • Contractor must be able to lift < 50 pounds and move human patient simulation equipment to and from training areas, work in low-light, high-volume environments, and differing weather conditions simulating actual aeromedical evacuation missions
